Cylindra beets have smooth, easy to peel skin, with a bold, earthy flavor, typical of long beet cultivars. 

Cylindra long beets are slender, dark red, and cylindrical. They offer a sweet, earthy flavor with a fine texture, ideal for uniform slices for pickling or roasting.

This old-fashioned cultivar of the species has a mounding habit and grows up to 18 inches tall and a foot wide. From summer to frost, it bears blossoms in shades of yellow, red, and orange which are held clear above the foliage.

Noteworthy Characteristics

These annuals are native to South America. They are suitable for garden edges, herb gardens, covering banks, hanging baskets, and other containers. The leaves and flowers are edible.

Care

Provide moist, well-drained soil in full sun. T. majus flowers best when grown in lean soil.

Very vigorous variety for spring and autumn crops as well as overwintering. It produces long glossy green leaves with a delicious tender mild minty flavour.

Long Slim Cayenne is easy to grow, very dependable, and will produce huge yields of very hot peppers. The long red peppers have thin walls and are easy to dry. They are most commonly used for chile flakes or powder, but excellent for pickling, and fresh eating too. This pepper plant is bushy and reaches 24″ tall.

Cayenne seeds can be started indoors.

Start seeds inside 8 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds 1/2" deep in pots with growing mix and place on a warm seedling mat or in a warm area that is 70 to 85 degrees with bright light. Peppers require relatively warm temperatures to germinate and grow quickly. After 8 weeks, when the outdoor garden soil has warmed, transplant the seedlings 20" apart in rich soil and full sun. 

When watering soak the soil to a depth of at least 6" so the soil stays moist but never soggy. Mulching can help to provide uniform moisture, conserve water, and reduce weeds. 

Harvest when full size and red. The Long Slim Cayennes grow 5-6" long.

Lightly steamed or boiled, chrysanthemum greens have a mildly grassy, herbaceous taste with stalks that are sweet and slightly crunchy. The greens are common additions to sukiyaki and shabu-shabu, and are also very good in soups.

Howden's Field Pumpkin grows up to 25 lbs. Its sweet solid flesh is great for pies and its size is good for making jack'o lanterns.

Pumpkin seeds can be planted directly into the garden soil.

Sow seed directly into a raised mound of warm garden soil in late spring. 

Plant seeds 2 seeds on top of each mound 1” deep. Mounds should be 6' apart. Thin to one plant per mound. They should come up in 7-10 days depending on the soil temperature and will grow quickly in warm weather.
