BEST CLIMBING VEGETABLES
#1. TOMATOES
Tomatoes are some of the most popular vegetables to grow, and there really is nothing more rewarding than picking off your very own homegrown tomatoes. There are many different climbing tomato varieties, but realistically, most tomatoes benefit greatly from a trellis or a cage.
#2. CHAYOTES
Also known as vegetable pear, chayotes are native to Latin America, specifically to southern Mexico and Guatemala. Chayotes are great vegetables to grow because the entire plant can be eaten including the leaves and stems which are often used to make soups, stews, and baby food.
#3. BEANS
Pole beans, Indian beans, broad beans, long beans, and runner beans are all perfect examples of container gardening! They will grow quickly and easily and benefit greatly from a trellis!
#4. PEAS
Peas prefer cooler conditions, so be sure to plant them early on in the spring or in the fall. For those who live in warmer climates, you can even plant them in the winter! But one thing's for sure, peas do love a good trellis, making them excellent container plants!
#5. CUCUMBERS
Cucumbers love climbing up, so be sure to set them up with a trellis! These fresh, crispy veggies are fairly easy to grow, and do wonders in pots or containers. Be sure to water regularly and give them plenty of sun!
#6. SQUASH
Summer squash includes zucchini, crookneck squash, and straight neck squash. All of theses squashes thrive well with a trellis, as long as you provide them with 6-7 hours of sunlight per day!
#7. MELONS
Varieties of melons such as cantaloupe and sugar baby are great for container growing and won't take up too much space! Give them enough sun, and cut back on watering once melons reach a cricket ball size.
