Lettuce

Lettuce Vegetable Seeds

Featuring heirloom, open-pollinated, non-GMO, untreated seeds.

As described around 50 AD, lettuce leaves were often cooked and served by the Romans with an oil-and-vinegar dressing; however, smaller leaves were sometimes eaten raw. During the 81–96 AD reign of Domitian, the tradition of serving a lettuce salad before a meal began. Post-Roman Europe continued the tradition of poaching lettuce, mainly with large romaine types, as well as the method of pouring a hot oil and vinegar mixture over the leaves.[10]

Today, the majority of lettuce is grown for its leaves, although one type is grown for its stem and one for its seeds, which are made into an oil.[22] Most lettuce is used in salads, either alone or with other greens, vegetables, meats and cheeses. Romaine lettuce is often used for Caesar salads. Lettuce leaves can also be found in soups, sandwiches and wraps, while the stems are eaten both raw and cooked.[11]

The consumption of lettuce in China developed differently from in Western countries, due to health risks and cultural aversion to eating raw leaves; Chinese "salads" are composed of cooked vegetables and are served hot or cold. Lettuce is also used in a larger variety of dishes than in Western countries, contributing to a range of dishes including bean curd and meat dishes, soups and stir-frys plain or with other vegetables. Stem lettuce, widely consumed in China, is eaten either raw or cooked, the latter primarily in soups and stir-frys.[47] Lettuce is also used as a primary ingredient in the preparation of lettuce soup.

Apple Romaine Leaf, Cut Again Type, Romaine Seeds

The term "Apple Romaine" refers to a specific variety of romaine lettuce, not a hybrid of an apple and lettuce. This variety is known for its bright, apple-green color and specific leaf characteristics.

Color: Bright, vibrant apple green.

Texture: Sturdy, crisp, and crunchy, providing a satisfying "high loft" when prepared.

Shape/Edges: The leaves have a smooth surface with distinctive serrated (toothed) edges and a slightly cupped shape.

Growth Habit: The plant has an upright growth habit, making harvesting easier.

Taste: Like other romaine varieties, it generally has a mild, subtly sweet and earthy flavor, with a slight hint of bitterness that adds depth.

The robust texture and flavor of Apple Romaine make it highly versatile.

Salads: It is ideal for salads, including the classic Caesar salad, as its sturdy leaves can hold up to thick and creamy dressings.

Wraps/Sandwiches: The leaves' shape and strength make them an excellent, low-carb replacement for tortillas, taco shells, or bread.

Cooking: Unlike some softer lettuces, Apple Romaine holds up well to heat and can be grilled, braised, or added to soups and stir-fries.

Organic Iceberg Lettuce Pellet Seeds, Crisphead Lettuce

Iceberg lettuce grows in small, dense heads. Commonly used in salads and sandwiches, they are prized more for their texture and crispiness than for the flavor of the leaves themselves. Iceberg was first cultivated in the Salinas Valley of California, then packed in ice and distributed across the US on trains, earning its namesake. Space plants 12" apart with 18" between rows.

These are the family favourite lettuce variety for salads and sandwiches. Make sure to give steady watering throughout the year to allow for these to properly shape into round, firm heads.  Your kids will thank you!

Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce Seeds, Gentilina Lettuce, Heat Lettuce

Black Seeded Simpson was one of the first lettuce varieties to be deemed an 'heirloom' in the middle years of the 19th century. This looseleaf variety is also one of the fastest lettuces to maturity, completing its growth cycle within 45-60 days. Baby greens can be harvested in less than a month after germination in many growing environments. Black Seeded Simpson is also one of the more durable greens, and will show good resistance to heat, cold, infestation and other potential problems. The light-green leaves are especially juicy, and are suitable for salad and other dishes. Space plants 6" apart, with 12" between rows.

Gentilina salad

Gentilina, or gentile, salad is a variety of lettuce belonging to the compositae family.

It has wavy leaves, of an intense green or reddish color, particularly sweet and crunchy.

Gentilina salad is obviously suitable for those who follow a healthy diet, it has a very low calorie content (19 per 100 grams).

It is rich in vitamins A, C, D, E and K, fiber and mineral salts such as potassium, iron and phosphorus and is a source of folic acid.

It also has a refreshing and digestive, laxative, analgesic and sedative action.
