Sugar Baby is an early season watermelon, coming to maturity approximately 75 days after germination. The small size of the fruits, and relatively short time to harvest, make Sugar Baby on of the easier varieties to cultivate. Sugar Baby melons typically do not exceed 10 pounds, with flavor red flesh and a light green rind with dark stripes.

Size: Small, round fruits, typically 7-8 inches (18-20 cm) in diameter, weighing 8-10 lbs (3.5-4.5 kg).

Flesh: Bright red, fine-grained, very sweet, juicy, and crisp with few seeds.

Rind: Dark green, thin, and tough, turning almost black when fully mature.

Maturity: An early-maturing variety (around 80 days), making it great for northern climates or short seasons.

A great-tasting, snake-striped heirloom watermelon that grows up to 25-50 lbs. or even larger!

This Watermelon is one of the oldest heirloom varieties in existence. Also known as “Gypsy,” this variety was developed in Georgia around the 1830s. The bright pink crisp flesh is sweet and juicy, and it is known for the green and white stripes that resemble the pattern of a rattlesnake. Their solid rind is thin but very tough and helps them travel and store well. Plant seeds outside after the soil has warmed in spring. Create small mounds of soil 24” apart in 6’ rows. Plant three seeds 1” deep on top of each mound and then later thin to one plant per mound.

Sangria watermelons are large, oval to oblong fruits, averaging 17 to 25 centimeters in diameter. The rind is smooth, firm, and dark green, covered in light green, broken stripes, and mottling. Underneath the surface, the thin portion of rind that connects to the flesh is white, crunchy, and edible with a vegetal, cucumber-like flavor. The flesh is dark red, dense, aqueous, and crisp, encasing many black-brown, flat seeds. Sangria watermelons are known for their smooth-grained texture and have a high sugar content emitting a sweet, subtly fruity flavor.
