June
-
-
SummaryJune is one of the best months for direct sowing in Canada because the soil is warmer and frost risk is usually finished in most regions. In colder areas, early June may still be cool, so tender crops should be planted only after nights are consistently warm. June is a warm and productive month for sowing seeds in Canada. Direct sow beans, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, corn, carrots, beets, radish, lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, basil, dill, sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, marigolds, and nasturtiums. Plant pepper transplants outdoors after frost risk has passed, but avoid starting pepper seeds outdoors unless growing in containers, a greenhouse, or for overwintering.

Catskill Brussel Sprouts, Choux De Bruxelles, Seeds
Catskill Brussels Sprouts are an heirloom variety that dates back to 1941. Plants produce loads of 2″, medium-green sprouts on 2′ stalks. Great for eating fresh or freezing. Brassica oleracea var gemmifera. 100 days to maturity.
Catskill Brussels Sprouts are a traditional open-pollinated heirloom variety developed in the United States and introduced in the mid-20th century by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York. Bred for improved uniformity and cold tolerance, this variety produces sturdy, upright plants with thick stalks and closely spaced, smooth, deep green sprouts that typically measure 1 to 1½ inches in diameter. Catskill Brussels Sprouts are known for their firm texture and mild, sweet, nutty flavor that becomes even better after exposure to frost, making them especially well suited for late fall and winter harvesting. Valued by home gardeners and market growers alike, this dependable variety offers good yields, excellent cold hardiness, and consistent quality, and remains a popular choice for roasting, steaming, or sautéing.

Aquilegia Columbine McKana Giants Mix, ALS Winner
This has to be one of the easiest and most rewarding Perennials available producing beautiful flowered, long spurred blooms in a multitude of colours and combinations. The attractive divided foliage forms a basal clump of fresh apple-green, leafing up early in spring to make a lovely foil for bulbs and early Primroses in the garden. They start pushing up flowering stems as early as April and go on producing a sequence of blooms until early June. The abundant, bee-pleasing flowers are 5cm (2in) in width, each with short, curled spurs are produced in in May, a month when flowers tend to be in short supply.
Nasturtium Jewel Mix, Whirlybird Mixture
This old-fashioned cultivar of the species has a mounding habit and grows up to 18 inches tall and a foot wide. From summer to frost, it bears blossoms in shades of yellow, red, and orange which are held clear above the foliage.
Noteworthy Characteristics
These annuals are native to South America. They are suitable for garden edges, herb gardens, covering banks, hanging baskets, and other containers. The leaves and flowers are edible.

Nasturtium Dwarf Jewel Double Mixture Flower
Nasturtium Jewel Mix
Jewel Mix produces edible 2" double blooms in jewel tones of light yellow, orange, and deep red. This hardy annual will flower all summer long with bright flowers that are held well above the foliage for an impressive color display. The edible foliage is unique with circular deep green leaves that have light-colored veins radiating from the center.
Jewel Mix Nasturtium seeds can be planted directly into the garden soil.
Sow seed directly into the garden in late spring to early summer or start seeds indoors in pots 4-6 weeks before spring frost danger has ended.
Plant seeds 1” deep (they need darkness to germinate) and 10-12” apart. Soak the seed overnight to enhance germination. They should come up in 7-10 days depending on the soil temperature and grow quickly in warm weather. Do not fertilize, except on extremely poor soil, as fertilization will promote leaf growth and suppress flowering.
Although they like dry soils and will tolerate drought, water them during the entire growing season to keep them blooming. This edible plant is very colorful and attractive in window boxes, hanging baskets, or rock gardens. Picking the flowers will prolong blooming. Plants can grow to a height of 16" tall and grow in full sun or partial shade.
