Black Beauty Tomato, Slicing Tomato, Hybrid Boar and Pink Berkeley

The Black Beauty tomato is a visually striking heirloom variety known for its nearly black skin, which develops due to high levels of anthocyanin antioxidants. Inside, it has deep red flesh and a rich, savory, smoky, and sweet-tangy flavor that is more complex than traditional tomatoes. These tomatoes are great for slicing, salads, and cooking, and they have a long shelf life, with flavor that can even improve with storage.

Skin: A deep, almost black-purple color on the top, often with a reddish-burgundy blush on the bottom when fully ripe.

Flesh: Deep red to raspberry-colored.

Shape: Typically round and meaty.

Flavor and texture

Flavor profile: Rich, savory, and smooth, with earthy and smoky notes, and a balanced sweetness and tanginess.

Texture: Meaty and juicy.

Growing and harvesting

Growing habit: Indeterminate (vining) plant.

Sun exposure: The "black" color intensifies with more sun exposure.

Harvesting: Ripens in the mid to late season (around 80-85 days from transplant) and should be harvested when the shaded base starts to blush.

Storage: Hangs well on the vine and stores well at room temperature, with its flavor often improving over time.

Radicchio, Variegata di Chioggia, Chicory

Another standout from our extensive radicchio trials. Best for fall and early winter harvest. Heads are slightly variable in shape and size but all have a nice red-pink and white variegation, lacking the green of Castelfranco and Luisa types. Large, round heads (think iceberg lettuce) are beautiful and the flavor is delicious, somewhere between the sweeter Castelfranco and the stronger flavored Rosso di Chioggia. According to Italian historical accounts, Variegata di Chioggia was selected out from a cross with Castelfranco and then the much redder Rosso di Chioggia was selected from Variegata di Chioggia. Originating near Chioggia, Italy.

Vates Collard, Collard Greens Seeds

(60 days) Open-pollinated. Because of their cold hardiness, collards were a miracle crop that sustained many southern folks through the winters during the Great Depression. Vates is the acronym for Virginia Truck Experiment Station, a hotbed of collard research from 1907-1967. Introduced in the 1930s, this was probably the best-known of all the many developed there. Large upright 1½–2' plants give generous harvests of dark green thick crumpled leaves with a mild cabbage-like flavor. Will overwinter in high tunnels in our climate.

The best environment to grow collard green or mustard greens is in full sun with plentiful, consistent moisture to thrive in your garden. Greens are frost tolerant, so growing them as a late season crop is ideal. Planting greens can also be done in early spring for a summer harvest, but more watering is likely necessary for them to grow successfully during the summer heat. Use insect netting to help protect from early insect infestations. Collards are best consumed in gumbo, braised, or sauteed.

COMMON PESTS: Aphids, Wihteflies

SUSCEPTIBLE TO: Bolting, Mosaic Virus, Fusarium Wilt
